I'll Be Damned Anna Wolfe Series Book 1 eBook Casey Keen Jenna DeVries Teri Editing Fairy

I love finding new book series and new writers, and found the title, story premise, and the characters in the sample to be interesting enough to buy the rest. I wish I hadn't.

Anna starts off a strong character, running her own business, connecting with friends, handling her family....then spirals down to a whiney, immature, irritating, and undeveloped being as she interacts with the other characters. None of the initially promising characters evolve with the story, and the book should have been half it's length for the portion of story it tells. There is no emotional connection made with the characters, no drive to understand them...and nothing to understand except they all want power or Anna. All she seems to want is her sister back (weakly) and time with a hot man. The fact that her cramps are her only struggle with learning her magic is unrealistic and keeps highlighted her shallowness. The disappointing part is that the author seems to have the imagination and a story idea with merit, but the dialog and character development kept jarring me out and made me lose interest. Even the twist at the end was flat- better development of evil characters was also needed. I had to work to finish this book, and the only reason I write this review is to hope the author reworks this story with an editor or a book club that can distill it, help with character personality, and ease the jolty dialog- then she will have a winner.

My other pet peeve with this book is that it was written in the present tense- which to me is highly awkward even when done well.

I'll Be Damned Anna Wolfe Series Book 1 eBook Casey Keen Jenna DeVries Teri Editing Fairy Reviews

The story was good. Very good. It intrigued me and kept me reading, wanting to know what's gonna happen next. One of the reasons it's a four star and not a five star is the authors use of the word " whatever" that word in its self doesn't bother me I use it myself a lot. It's the fact that she has a bad habit of saying "...or whatever" " how do you know I'm in danger. Or whatever." "...have powers, or whatever" that in and of its self irritated me to no end. Otherwise I can't wait to read the second book. Don't skip tho s book just cause of "whatever" you'll get over it. I did.
I don't usually review books, but I dislike this one so much I just had to say something. Awful characters, poor writing, tedious long paragraphs about not much of anything, and annoying little things (like she supposedly "sprinting" through the woods at night in 4 inch heels??); it all just added up to a huge thumbs down for me. Main character Anna whiny, extremely immature and a total idiot. She's attracted to pretty much every guy that crosses her path (even though they're all jerks) and spends more time sleeping or throwing hissy fits than anything else. [SLIGHT SPOILER HERE] She sees a bat demon, is told by Valen and her parents that she's a witch, fights off a lizard demon with her new magic and THEN still says she's having a hard time taking it seriously because it just doesn't seem real??? How much more real do you want it? And it was really annoying trying to read dialog where everyone either "screams" or "spits" their lines which made a lot of the dialog seem even more juvenile. Definitely won't be rushing out to buy book 2.
GOOD IDEAS AND STORY I GENERAL. Very lengthy descriptions and exposition overall makes this book difficult to read and details difficult to retain because they were shoved in long long
expositions. Not enough dialogue between important characters to establish believable, meaningful. relationships. As the book goes on the characters grow to a degree. A d the dialogue and interaction improves . However how many times to we have to read about Anna taking a shower and what clothes she is wearing . Although I understood this was a series, most other series I have read have some type of ending . T HIS just waits for you to buy
book 2 which doesn't thrill me.
The plot has promise, but the delivery falls flat for me. This book is really dense, unnecessarily so. There is so much packed in the up front that I kept putting the book down. I plowed through and got to where the book picks up steam. Again, good ideas, the execution has too much. The side characters are stereotypical at best - her best friend is always drunk and can't hold her liquor. Her best male friend is African American and flamboyantly gay whose English and sentence structure is offensive and weird given everyone else around him. It is disappointing. I don't hate the book but I doubt seriously if I will read the others in the series. It is a shame because all the elements are there for me to love. this book.
I really did not like this book. It sounded promising, but halfway through nothing had really happened. The book seems to mostly consist of the main character complaining about how hard she has to work at the coffee shop she owns. She is annoying. The whole mysterious hero is annoying. He shows up and stares at her and leaves without speaking. I think he was better for not speaking, once he begins to speak, he is not a likable fellow.

I feel bad giving a bad review, but I read over halfway and just could not read any more. I hope if Keen wants to make a series out of this she will get some help editing to improve the pacing of this first book, and rework the characters a little. The main character is all over the place, she doesn't like to drink, yet she goes out drinking several times in the first half of the book. She complains her sister wants her to do just what the person that gets killed in the scary movie does, and then later she does precisely that. There was no consistency.

I would not recommend this book, unless it has been re-edited.
